What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)?

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects the basal epithelial layer of skin and mucosal surfaces. With over 200 types, HPV is among the most common infections worldwide, and a large portion of the population encounters this virus at some point in their lives. While most infections are cleared spontaneously by the immune system within 2 years, particularly high-risk types can lead to persistent infections and contribute to cancers of the cervix, anus, vulva, vagina, penis, and oropharynx (throat).

How is HPV Transmitted and What are its Symptoms?

HPV is most commonly transmitted through direct sexual contact (vaginal, oral, anal); however, it is not limited to sexual intercourse. It can also be transmitted through micro-traumas and cracks in the skin from shared towels, underwear, hair removal centers, gyms, pools, and public restrooms, which are moist/shared areas.

  • Common Symptoms: The infection is mostly asymptomatic. When symptoms do appear, the most common findings are flesh-colored, raised or flat warts (condylomas) in the genital area, around the anus, or in the mouth/throat. Women may also experience intermenstrual bleeding or irregular periods.

  • Prevention and Precautions: Vaccination (especially ideal between ages 9-26), regular screenings (Pap Smear and HPV DNA tests), barrier hygiene, and proper intimate care practices that support mucosal immunity play a fundamental role in prevention.

What is Herpes Simplex Virus (Genital Herpes - HSV)?

HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) is a common viral infection worldwide, transmitted through skin and mucous membrane contact. While HSV Type 1 is mostly seen around the mouth and HSV Type 2 in the genital area, both types can cause lesions in both areas. Once in the body, the virus settles in nerve cells; it reactivates during times of stress, fatigue, and weakened immunity, leading to recurrent outbreaks.

What are the Symptoms of HSV (Genital Herpes)?

The most prominent symptoms are fluid-filled blisters in the genital, perianal, or perioral areas that begin with itching, burning, and stinging, then rupture and turn into painful sores. These lesions may be accompanied by burning during urination, swollen lymph nodes in the groin, fever, and fatigue. While the risk of transmission is very high during an active lesion period, transmission can also occur from asymptomatic carriers.

What is Genital Warts (Condyloma)?

Genital warts are lesions that appear in the genital and perianal areas, caused by certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Low-risk HPV Types 6 and 11 are responsible for over 90% of genital wart cases. The virus, transmitted through micro-cracks in the skin and mucous membranes, activates and triggers lesion formation, especially when immune resistance is low.

What are the Symptoms of Genital Warts and How are They Treated?

  • Symptoms: These are soft, moist, pink or flesh-colored bumps that are single or clustered in the genital area, often resembling a cauliflower. They can sometimes cause itching, burning, and discomfort.

  • Treatment & Supportive Care: Depending on the size and extent of the warts, cryotherapy (freezing), electrocauterization (burning), laser, or surgical methods are applied. As a supportive treatment and to prevent the virus from attaching, topical products containing Glycyrrhizic Acid derived from licorice root can be preferred.

  • Prevention: The most effective method of prevention is the HPV vaccine; however, condom use, maintaining a strong immune system, and proper intimate hygiene habits are important in reducing the risk of transmission and recurrence.

What is Genital Herpes?

Genital herpes is a chronic and contagious infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), characterized by painful, fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) in the genital and anal regions. While HSV Type 2 is responsible for most cases, HSV Type 1 can also cause genital herpes as a result of oral-genital contact. After entering the body, the virus settles in nerve ganglia and reactivates during periods of weakened immune resistance, stress, fever, and fatigue, leading to recurrent outbreaks.

What are the Symptoms of Genital Herpes and How is it Transmitted?

HSV is transmitted through direct skin and mucous membrane contact; transmission can also occur from asymptomatic carriers who do not have active lesions.

  • Symptoms: Burning, itching, and tingling sensation before lesions (prodromal period); followed by clusters of painful, fluid-filled blisters around the vulva, vagina, penis, scrotum, or anus. These blisters rupture within a few days, turning into open sores (ulcers) and then heal by crusting over.

  • Associated Conditions: Burning during urination, swollen lymph nodes in the groin, fatigue, and fever may occur. The first (primary) outbreaks are much more severe than recurrent ones.

  • Treatment & Support: In addition to medical antiviral treatments, topical gels and sprays containing Glycyrrhizic Acid derived from licorice root provide clinical support in alleviating the severity and duration of outbreaks by helping to prevent viral replication and cell attachment. In cases of active herpes during pregnancy, a Cesarean section is usually preferred to prevent transmission to the baby during birth.
